Before You Adopt – Please Read

Rescue Dogs Are Different

Many rescue dogs come from unknown or unstable backgrounds. While we provide veterinary care and behavioral evaluations, we cannot guarantee health, temperament, or future behavior.

The Adjustment Period

The 3-3-3 Rule explains how dogs typically adjust after entering a new home: the first 3 days are for decompressing and recovering from the stress of change, the first 3 weeks are spent learning routines and expectations, and by 3 months most dogs begin to truly feel safe and at home. Behavior changes during this time are completely normal.

Returns

If an adoption does not work out, the dog must be returned to APPR. Dogs may not be rehomed, sold, or given away. We do not refund adoption fees.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Adopting a Rescue Dog

  • Am I ready for a long-term commitment that could last 10–15 years, even if my life circumstances change?
  • Do I have the time, patience, and emotional bandwidth to support a dog through decompression, training, and adjustment?
  • How will I handle behavioral challenges such as accidents, fear, reactivity, or separation anxiety?
  • Can I remain consistent, calm, and compassionate during setbacks or slow progress?
  • Does my daily schedule allow for proper care, exercise, training, and companionship?
  • How many hours per day will the dog be left alone, and do I have a plan for workdays, travel, or emergencies?
  • Is everyone in my household fully on board and willing to follow the same rules and routines?
  • Am I financially prepared for adoption fees, routine vet care, food, training, grooming, and unexpected medical costs?
  • Is my home environment safe and appropriate, including space, fencing, and landlord or HOA approval?
  • Am I willing to make changes to my home or routine to meet a dog’s needs?
  • Do my expectations allow the dog to be who they are, not who I want them to be?
  • Am I open to guidance from the rescue and willing to ask for help if challenges arise?
